The concept behind Bound to Fall was to create a piece based on re-contextualizing certain musical elements found in Bob Dylan’s infamous song, Like a Rolling Stone. Much of the musical material is generated from small rhythmic and melodic motives sung in the opening verse, coupled with a distinct collection of three pitches tied to the chorus and closing verse, “How does it feel?” and “Like a rolling stone.” Throughout this piece one will hear these melodic and rhythmic snippets realized in various ways, such as accompaniment figures, angler and flowing melodies and as a toy tambourine placed upon the piano strings.
One of the main ideas that governed much of the form and musical unfolding of Bound to Fall was in response to the driving pulse and energy of Bob Dylan’s singing style and the bands instrumental accompaniment. The overall trajectory of this work attempts to systematically build this energy until the final section. – M.L.
