Bluest Best Moon is a slow-motion musical anagram based on Bob Dylan’s “Tombstone Blues.” In writing this response, I was interested to see how far I could venture from the song’s original affect by lifting and reorganizing some of its raw materials. I used two musical elements from “Tombstone Blues”: the vocal melody from the first few verses and chorus (stripped of its original rhythm), and the descending pentatonic/blues guitar riff from the song’s intro. Across each main section of the piece, these themes are reharmonized, superimposed, and ultimately transformed. The title of this response is an anagram of the title of the song upon which it’s based. - M.L.
